Look beyond the number on the scales.

Your weight is only one part of the picture.

At Lymph Movement Studio, we use advanced Mediana i55 body composition technology to help you understand what’s happening beneath the scales—including body water, muscle mass, body fat and how these components are distributed throughout your body.

For people managing lymphatic health, lipoedema, fluid retention or changes in body composition, regular monitoring can provide valuable information that weight alone simply can’t show.

What is body composition?

Body composition looks at what your body is made up of—not simply how much you weigh.

The Mediana i55 uses bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) to estimate a range of body composition measures, including:

  • Total body water
  • Intracellular and extracellular water
  • Skeletal muscle mass
  • Body fat mass and percentage
  • Lean body mass
  • Segmental muscle and fat distribution
  • Extracellular water ratio
  • Phase angle
  • Changes in body composition over time

The i55 also provides segmental information, allowing us to look at differences between the arms, legs and trunk rather than viewing your body as one number.

Why monitor body composition?

Body weight can change for many reasons.

A change on the scales doesn’t tell you whether you’ve lost fat, muscle or fluid—or a combination of these.

This is particularly relevant if you are:

  • Managing lipoedema or lymphatic issues
  • Experiencing fluid retention or changes in swelling
  • Working towards weight or metabolic health goals
  • Following a nutrition or lifestyle program
  • Using a weight-management medication
  • Preparing for or recovering from surgery
  • Working to maintain muscle while reducing body fat
  • Wanting a more complete picture of your health and progress

Rather than focusing solely on weight, body composition monitoring helps us look at what is changing and how your body is changing over time.

Understanding fluid balance

One of the particularly useful aspects of the Mediana i55 for our clients is its ability to provide information about body water and the distribution of extracellular and intracellular water.

The extracellular water ratio can be tracked over time, alongside other body composition measurements.

This doesn’t diagnose lymphoedema, but it can provide another piece of information when we’re looking at your overall health, fluid balance and changes over time.

For clients with lymphatic concerns, we can consider these results alongside your symptoms, clinical history and other observations to build a more complete picture.

It's about trends - not one-off numbers

A single scan gives you a snapshot.

Repeated measurements give us a story.

That’s why we recommend monitoring body composition at regular intervals where appropriate. Comparing your results over time can help identify trends in:

Muscle → Fat → Fluid → Body weight → Body composition

This can be particularly useful when you’re making changes to your nutrition, movement or lifestyle.

For example, if your weight is changing, we can look beyond the scales to see whether that change appears to be associated with changes in body fat, muscle mass or body water.

Your results, explained

Numbers can be confusing—and you shouldn’t have to interpret a multi-page body composition report on your own.

During your appointment, we’ll talk through your results and help you understand:

  • What your current measurements mean
  • How your results compare with previous assessments
  • Changes in muscle and fat mass
  • Changes in body water
  • Segmental differences between your arms, legs and trunk
  • What trends may be relevant to your individual goals

Your results can then be used alongside your nutrition, movement and lymphatic health plan.

Who is body composition monitoring for?

Body composition monitoring may be helpful if you:

Have lymphatic concerns
Track changes in body composition and fluid-related measures alongside your broader lymphatic health.

Have lipoedema
Monitor changes in body composition without relying solely on weight or BMI.

Are working on weight management
See whether changes are occurring in body fat and lean mass—not just total body weight.

Are using a weight-management medication
Monitor changes in body composition as part of your broader nutrition and health support.

Are preparing for surgery
Establish a baseline and monitor changes as part of your pre- and post-surgical health plan.

Want to understand your body better
Sometimes the scales simply don’t tell the whole story.

How it works

1. Your baseline

We begin with an i55 body composition assessment to establish your baseline measurements.

2. Understand your results

We’ll explain your report and identify the measurements that are most relevant to you.

3. Track your progress

Repeat assessments allow us to compare your results over time and identify meaningful changes.

4. Adjust your plan

Your results can help inform your nutrition, lifestyle and health goals where appropriate.

How often should I have a scan?

For many people, every 8–12 weeks provides a useful timeframe to observe meaningful changes.

However, the ideal frequency depends on your individual goals.

If you’re actively working on body composition, nutrition or weight management, we may recommend more regular monitoring. For general health monitoring, less frequent assessments may be appropriate.

Body composition is more than a number on the scales.

Whether your goal is to better understand fluid balance, maintain muscle, change body composition or simply have more information about what’s happening inside your body, regular monitoring can give you a clearer picture of your progress.
